Dear West View family

I’d like to start by thanking you for your generous giving towards those in need. So far, you have donated 28 Buckets of Love as part of our Lenten expression of love. These will be shared with needy families after Easter. Bless you for your generosity.

A lot is happening at West View this weekend!

We’re hosting the W.A. District Meetings, and Bishop Themba will be preaching at our 7h45 service, where he will be inducting the new W.A. District Executive into office. Our own Penny Wellington will be inducted as District W.A. President.
At 9h45, Alvean Jacobs is the preacher. She will be sharing, in greater detail, the story of God’s miraculous healing of her. It will be an inspiring service.

On Saturday, a mission team from Church of the Resurrection, USA, arrives. They will be worshipping with us on Sunday, and servicing at Elim and at Ditshego during next week. They’ll also be joining some of you at your home groups. Their visits are always a great expression of what it means to belong to God’s global church.

HOLY WEEK

Here’s what Holy Week 2018 is going to look like. Block off these dates in your diary now – you will be blessed inasmuch as you participate in these worship moments

Monday 26th March 7pm: Rev Pete Grassouw will be the guest preacher at our Holy Monday Service
Tuesday 27th March 7pm: A Worship Extravaganza. Come and soak in God’s presence as you worship Him. The service will include Holy Communion
Wednesday 28th March 6pm: Come along with your picnic blankets and baskets for a family picnic in the sanctuary. Our Youth will be presenting a drama at this all-age event
Thursday 29th March 7pm: Tenebrae (Service of Shadows). This powerful service is a time to reflect deeply on God’s love for you, shown in Jesus.

EASTER WEEKEND

Please note that this year, we’re holding 2 Good Friday Services – 7h30 and 9h00. I’ll be sharing with you a dramatic monologue called “The Gospel in Chairs”. The offering at this service will support the training up of ministers in our denomination. Please support this investment in the future leadership of our church.
Friday afternoon’s Remembrance Service, hosted by the Pastoral Care cluster, is at 5pm
Our Sunrise service is at Mnandi Methodist Church, Short Rd, at 6am
Easter Communion Services at West View at 7h45 and 9h45
Our 6pm service is a movie night – we’ll be watching God’s Not Dead II

FINANCES

Tithes and Offerings for the first 2 months of 2018 totalled R923 000. This is R17 000 less than tithes and offerings for the first two months of 2017, and leaves us with a budget shortfall of R90 000. Each one of your tithes and offerings make a difference! Please join me in doing what you can to ensure that West View continues to be a place where life change happens.

WHICH BIBLE COMMENTARY SHOULD YOU USE?

Recently, a congregation member e-mailed me. She was rightly concerned about the scholarly integrity of free online commentaries but was hungry for scholarly study of scripture. I thought there might be others of you that would find my response to her helpful:

“If you are looking for online commentaries, then I suggest you try the following:

William Barclay’s commentaries: If you want commentary on John 15, for example, google ‘William Barclay John 15’ and it will direct you to the STUDYLIGHT website with the commentaries there. His commentaries are both accessible and scholarly. However, they only cover the New Testament https://www.studylight.org/
For Old Testament, Matthew Henry’s Commentary is a classic. This is also available on the Studylight website/ google search. It was written in the 1600’s – which is why it is available free on the internet – it’s now in public domain. So that language is old-English, but the scholarship is sound.

DUKE INTERN 2018

This year we will be blessed to have Alexandra Nelson interning with us for two months starting 19th May. Alexandra is in her early 30’s and is preparing for ordination in the United Methodist Church. We need to find accommodation for Alexandra. If you are able to assist, either for the entire two mtonths, or just for one month, please contact Siphiwe (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) by the end of March. Alexandra is able to contribute towards the cost of her board and lodging.

Join me in praying for, and expecting, God to be glorified in all of the activities of the next few weeks

Grace and Peace
