14 January 2018

Dear West View family

As I write to you, the happy sound of children laughing and playing drifts up from the sanctuary lawns. Over 90 children, led by 40 teens, are participating in this week’s SUPERHERO Holiday Club. Join me in praying for the Holy Spirit to touch the lives of children and teens alike. Our Holiday Clubs are one of the ways in which we seek to introduce young people to Jesus as their Saviour. Josh and James and their team of volunteers value your prayers.

From this Sunday 14th January, we will be back to our full compliment of 3 services each Sunday ie. 7h45, 9h45 and 18h00. Children’s Ministry at all three services will begin on Sunday 21st January. At 7h45 and 18h00, children join their parents in the sanctuary for the first 10 minutes of the service before leaving for Godly Play. At 9h45, I encourage parents to register their children at Children’s Church by 9h30, so that you can be seated and centred in time for the start of worship at 9h45.

Thank you to those of you who donated food towards Khuluma’s Food Pantry. This food will be a blessing to clients of Khuluma who have fallen on rough times. And thank you for your generous Christmas Eve and Day offerings towards Ditshego. The cost to sponsor a child in Ditshego is R400/month, and the R34 450 you donated will cover the cost of seven children in the Ditshego programme for 2018.

We have budgeted, for 2018, on a 4.4% increase on 2017 actual tithes and offerings. Please consider this as you prayerfully consider the level of giving that God is calling you to give at in 2018.

This Sunday marks the start of our first preaching series of 2018. This is a good series to which to invite your unchurched neighbour of family member to. We’ll be exploring God’s invitation to us to ‘reboot’ the relationships that give our lives meaning and purpose: our relationships with God, with our neighbour, with ourselves, and with nature. Daily Devotional booklets will be on sale for R10 after all three services, or you can download them off our website.

Our annual Covenant Renewal Service in on Sunday 21st January. As well as sharing in Communion at all 3 services, we will join together in praying the WESLEY COVENANT PRAYER. I encourage you to spend time between now and the 21st, pondering this prayer of life-giving surrender:

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will;
put me to doing, put me to suffering;
let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you,
exalted for you, or brought low for you;
let me be full,
let me be empty,
let me have all things,
let me have nothing:
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things
to your pleasure and disposal.
And now, glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours. So be it.
And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.

The words “Put me to doing, put me to suffering”, do not mean that we ask God to make us suffer, but that we desire, by God’s help, to be faithful to God, even if that faithfulness should cause us to endure suffering for the sake of God’s Kingdom.

Grace and Peace
