Greetings to the Saints gathered in the name of Jesus!

If for some reason I knew that someone was on a path that would lead to his/her destruction, & even death, my first instinctive reaction would be to try & persuade the person not to follow that path. I would do anything in my power to stop that person. This is what Peter (& the other disciples of Jesus), tried to do when they kept hearing Jesus tell them that he was going to Jerusalem to die.

During Lent, we are reminded of the path Jesus decided to take – the path to suffering & death. If we knew less about the path Jesus took more than 2000 years ago, we would want to stop him; but we know more. On Palm Sunday we sing the hymn:
Ride on, ride on in Majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die,
Bow your meek head to mortal pain,
Then take, O Christ, your power to reign.

We sing this because we know that this path leads, not to suffering, but to healing; not to death but to life. We walk, not in the darkness but towards the light. So, this time is not so much about where we stand, but where we are going. The darkness of Lent, as the shadow of the cross looms large towards us, does not lead us to despair, so we keep lifting up our heads, look up, & beyond this suffering we see a great glory. So we continue to sing… “Ride on, ride on in majesty…”

Grace and Peace
